Oxford American Legion Post 111 Presents Four Chaplains Church Service

Four Chaplin Service

Anniston, AL – On February 2, 2025, the Eulaton United Methodist Church in Anniston, Alabama, hosted the annual Four Chaplains Church Service, organized by the American Legion Post 111. The service commenced at 10:30 AM and was followed by a luncheon, fostering community spirit and remembrance.

Reverend Carol Lambert, who leads both Coldwater United Methodist Church and Eulaton United Methodist Church, expressed her honor in participating in this year’s remembrance. She stated, “American Legion Post 111 asked if we would participate with them in remembering the Four Chaplains for the annual remembrance service, and I was honored to do so. We wanted it because there are so many Veterans in both churches. We were thrilled for them to come and thrilled to have both churches participate. This service was meaningful to me as it reflects the selfless love shown by these ordinary individuals during extraordinary circumstances.”
Her sentiment captures the essence of the day, honoring the legacy of the Four Chaplains who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.

Preston Hale, the Judge Advocate for Oxford American Legion Post 111, shared his hopes for the attendees. “The condition of the world is pretty much the same today as it was during World War II. People need hope, and they need us to be the light for them. Hopefully, we can step up and do our part to help make our nation a greater and better place.” Hale’s words resonated with the congregation, emphasizing the relevance of the Four Chaplains’ legacy in today’s society.

The service included various elements to engage the congregation, such as hymns and a detailed overview of the Four Chaplains’ story. The chaplains—George L. Fox, John P. Washington, Clark B. Poling, and Alexander Goode—were remembered for their bravery and faith while serving aboard the USAT Dorchester, which was torpedoed in 1943. They famously gave away their life jackets to others, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and love for fellow humans.

The ceremony brought together veterans and community members, allowing them to reflect on the sacrifices made by those in service. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie, honoring not just the Four Chaplains, but all veterans who have served and sacrificed for their country.
