Oxford, AL – Oxford marked its 173rd anniversary with a lively celebration on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Oxford City Hall. Hosted by Historic Main Street Oxford and the Oxford Arts Council, the event brought together city leaders, residents, and special guests for an afternoon filled with history, entertainment, and community spirit.
Historic Main Street Oxford Director Hunter Gentry kicked off the celebration with an Oxford trivia quiz, awarding city-themed prizes to those with the correct answers. Council President Chris Spurlin led the invocation, emphasizing the importance of recognizing milestones big and small.
“A lot of cities just do the big ones,” Spurlin said. “I’m thankful to the Arts Council and Historic Main Street Oxford, who always do a good job.”
Mayor Alton Craft reflected on Oxford’s growth and achievements, crediting the city’s success to its people.
“I look around after 45 years of service and see we have world competitions here – world softball championships at Choccolocco Park, world pianists playing at OPAC, people from all over the state and nation playing championships here,” Craft said. “They want to bring the state and world robotics championships to Oxford. We are very blessed.”
He also noted that visitors from across the globe appreciate Oxford for more than its facilities and events.
“When you ask these people from all around the world why they like coming to Oxford, they will tell you it’s the hospitality and people who care, and they love to be here,” Craft added. “You are remarkable people.”
Oxford Arts Council President Cindy Williams highlighted the city’s thriving arts scene and the opportunities it provides for students and citizens to showcase their talents and civic pride.
“Oxford is Alabama at its best,” Williams said.
The celebration concluded with a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” performed by the Oxford High School Show Choir. Guests enjoyed light snacks provided by the Oxford Arts Council and had the chance to capture memories at a photo booth while mingling with Mayor Craft and members of the Oxford City Council.
With a rich history and a bright future ahead, Oxford’s 173rd birthday was a testament to the city’s enduring sense of community and progress.
Happy Birthday, Oxford!
