Oxford City Council Honors Special Citizens

Oxford, AL – Mayor Alton Craft and the Oxford City Council took time from their regular business on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 to pay tribute to some citizens who have helped make life better for their fellow residents.

Oxford Firefighter Madison Mintz was awarded the Oxford Fire Department’s Earl Haynes Award of Excellence by Fire Chief Gary Sparks for his courageous service during a house fire which occurred on January 19, 2025. Mintz was also awarded the Firefighter of the Year Award from American Legion Post 111.

Sparks noted Mintz was in the first firefighter class offered at Oxford High School, and it was the school district that was next in line for recognition by the city council.

Oxford City Schools Superintendent Dr. Shannon Stanley, members of the city board of education, and members of the district’s administrative team accepted a resolution honoring the system for having earned the highest distinction of achieving all “A”s on the Alabama Report Card as well as raising the graduation rate to almost 96 percent.

Mayor Craft also proclaimed the day in honor of William D. Jones, better known as “Uncle Bill” and “Mr. Bill,” as he celebrated his 100th birthday. “Mr. Bill” has been a resident of Rainbow Omega since 2001 and enjoys trains and spreading Christmas cheer dressing as Santa. The native of Bristol, Tennessee also is an avid fan of NASCAR and the University of Tennessee, which sent him a gift bag of special Tennessee Volunteers items.

The City Council also conducted the following business:

Approved Ordinance No. 2025- 06 – Ordinance enacting regulations governing the sale of cats and dogs.

Approved Ordinance No. 2025- 07 – Ordinance establishing the compensation of the Council Members of the City of Oxford effective the first Monday of November, 2025.

Approvedf Ordinance No. 2025- 08 – Ordinance establishing the compensation of the Mayor of the City of Oxford effective the first Monday of November, 2025.

Set Public Hearings for March 11, 2025, to consider the following requests which were considered by the Oxford Planning Commission at their February 4, 2025 meeting: Zoning request from Bobby P. Barker, L. Megan Barker Sisson, and Justin B. Sisson to rezone property located at 0 U.S. Highway 78 (PIN59769) from Neighborhood Shopping Center District (NSC) to Light Manufacturing District (M-1); To amend the Zoning Ordinance Article 4, Residential Districts, Section 4.06, Garden Home (GH) District, Section 4.07, Townhouse (TH) District and Table 4-2, Area and Dimensional Regulations, Residential Districts; To amend the Zoning Ordinance Article 6, Special Districts, Table 6-3, PD Development Standards; To amend the Zoning Ordinance Article 8, Parking, Table 8-1, Required Off-Street Parking Spaces by Use.

Set a Public Hearing for March 11, 2025 to consider a condemnation at 250 Woodard Avenue.

Set the next regular council meeting for March 11, 2025 at City Hall.
