Oxford, AL — In a decisive move to safeguard the well-being of its residents, the Oxford City Council unanimously passed Ordinance No. 2024-30 during their meeting on October 22, 2024. The ordinance targets the sale and distribution of non-conforming pharmaceuticals marketed as pain management, dietary supplements, or relaxation aids, which pose significant risks to public health, safety, and welfare.
The council’s decision follows reports of an increasing presence of dangerous substances that mimic controlled drugs, which have been linked to adverse health effects, including impaired judgment and addiction. The new ordinance makes it illegal for any registered business within Oxford to manufacture, sell, or display these substances.
In addition to the ordinance, the council approved several resolutions, including the condemnation of properties at 100 and 112 McKibbon Street. A public hearing was set for November 12 to discuss a zoning change for a property on Old Highway 202.
Mayor Alton Craft also made two notable announcements. November 19 was declared “Jane Hamric Batey Day” to honor a local community leader, and Alan, a city staff member, received recognition as a nominee for Alabama’s 2024 Municipal Clerk of the Year.
