    • Two individuals received the Earl Haynes Award for Excellence from Chief Gary Sparks and the City of Oxford. Chief Sparks explained that on April 25th, 2023, Oxford Fire Department received a call for a structure fire with entrapment. Upon seeing the smoke coming from her neighbors house Ms. Tennille Wilson entered the home in an attempt to rescue her neighbor, Ms. Wilson was soon overcome by the excessive smoke and had to exit the home and found Capt. Chad Gilchrist in civilian clothes ready to respond to the call. Capt. Gilchrist lived close to the home and rushed to the scene in just a t-shirt and shorts with no protective gear or SCBA. Capt. Gilchrist bravely searched the structure and located the victim. Capt Gilchrist extricated the victim and returned to the home in an effort to find additional possible victims. OFD personnel arrived on scene and started providing medical care to the patient. We thank Ms. Wilson and Capt. Gilchrist for their bravery and courage in the face of such danger. It was further noted that the gentleman reduced was a Hospice patient. His son told the Chief that these courageous actions gave him more time with his father before he did pass away.
