Oxford Community Urged to Join Hands in Tackling Emergency Blood Shortage

Community Encouraged to Help Fight Emergency Blood Shortage

Oxford, AL – In response to a critical blood shortage impacting local hospitals, the City of Oxford Healthcare Authority is rallying the community to participate in a three-day blood drive in collaboration with LifeSouth. The drive is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, February 6, through Thursday, February 8, at the Friendship Community Center, located at 2930 Friendship Road in Oxford, operating from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Winter storms in the region have left the local blood supply at alarmingly low levels, prompting the urgent need for blood donations. The community is encouraged to step up and contribute to replenishing the blood supply during this critical time of year, marked by weather-related cancellations of blood drives and a decline in donor participation.

All blood donors will be appreciated for their life-saving contributions and will receive a $25 e-gift card, available while supplies last. Platelet and double red donors will receive an additional $20 e-gift card as a token of gratitude for their generosity.

As Tom Dixon, representing the City of Oxford Healthcare Authority, highlights, “Donating blood is a crucial way to support local hospitals, particularly during the challenging winter months when the blood supply tends to dip due to adverse weather conditions and disruptions in scheduled blood drives. Give local, save local. Your blood donation can make a significant impact.”

Potential blood donors should meet certain criteria, including being at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission), weighing a minimum of 110 pounds, and being in good health. A valid photo ID is required for the donation process.

For those interested in contributing to this vital cause or scheduling a donation appointment, please call toll-free at 888-795-2707 or visit lifesouth.org. Join the City of Oxford Healthcare Authority and LifeSouth in their mission to address the emergency blood shortage and make a positive impact on the local healthcare community.
