Oxford, AL – The Oxford Fire Department (OFD) responded to a call at the Target Department Store located at 400 Oxford Exchange Boulevard early this afternoon.
According to Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks, a Water Flow Alarm was reported at 12:18 p.m. Before firefighters arrived on scene, Calhoun County 911 upgraded the call to a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a cooler in the front of the store had caught fire, activating two sprinkler heads.
Chief Sparks noted that the sprinkler system successfully contained the fire until the OFD arrived. Store employees had already evacuated the building as a precautionary measure.
The store sustained minor fire and water damage as a result of the incident. Cleanup and restoration crews are expected to work over the next few days to remove standing water and restore the sprinkler system to full operation. The store is anticipated to remain closed during that time.
