Oxford High School Concert Choir Selected to Sing at State Capitol

Oxford, AL – Per the Oxford City Schools the High School Concert Choir was selected from a pool of Alabama public school applicants to be one of nine to perform during the 2023 Capitol Tunes series.

On Mar. 16 members of the Oxford High School Concert Choir will get the unique and sought-after experience of performing in the rotunda of our state capitol. Many performance departments across the state apply each year in hopes of getting a coveted spot in the Capitol Tunes series. This year, it was the concert choir from OHS earning one of nine spots.

“Performing at the capitol is not only an honor for our entire music department at OHS, but it is essential in demonstrating the immense and unlimited possibilities that music and the performing arts provides for our students,” says Holly Luke, the OHS director of choirs.

Members of the concert choir range in age from 9 – 12 grades. Many who grew up in the Oxford City School system visited the capitol during their elementary field trips, but this time eyes will be on them. One of the student singers, senior Dominique Stephens, echoes this evolution from spectator to performer:

“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to perform for the decision-makers in Montgomery! We get to show the importance of performing arts in our public schools. Being in band and choir has made my high school experience!”

The choir will sing a capella selections and perform for a minimum of 20 minutes. “We plan to sing positive, uplifting song selections that will promote hope and unity and leave the audience inspired for the future of our state,” says Mrs. Luke.
