Oxford, AL – What if high school students had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in business, marketing, finance, and event planning? That’s exactly what is happening at Oxford High School through the Reach and Teach program. Instead of relying solely on textbooks and hypothetical scenarios, students are taking an active role in planning, promoting, and producing a real concert on their campus.
The Reach and Teach program is designed to provide students with tangible, real-world learning experiences that go beyond traditional classroom settings. Recognizing that many students struggle to reach their full potential through standard educational methods, Oxford High School is embracing this innovative approach to bridge the gap between theory and practice. By participating in the program, students are directly involved in managing all aspects of a live concert event, gaining valuable skills in budgeting, logistics, marketing, and leadership.
This year, Oxford High School students have been working for months under the guidance of their teacher, Susan Harryman, to bring an 80s rock cover band, The Velcro Pygmies, to perform on campus on April 30th. Throughout the process, students have set goals, analyzed their target market, maintained an event budget, and developed sponsorship packages. The experience has given them firsthand insight into the complexities of event planning and business management.
In addition to the concert, students will participate in ImaginEx, a career exploration festival designed to connect them with real-world opportunities in the entertainment, music, and business industries. During the festival, students will engage with industry professionals, gain hands-on experience, and explore career paths related to live event production. This event serves as a bridge between their classroom learning and future career possibilities, demonstrating how the skills they are developing can translate into real-world success.
“Our goal is to provide students with a hands-on, real-world learning experience that fosters confidence, creativity, and leadership,” said Ashlyn Stutts, Programs Manager for Reach and Teach. “The curriculum is not just about teaching marketing and business concepts—we’re equipping students with the tools to apply them in real-world settings, moving beyond traditional textbook learning.”
Through Reach and Teach, students gain industry connections, practical skills, and a deeper understanding of career pathways. This program is making a lasting impact on their futures by showing them firsthand how their education can lead to exciting professional opportunities.
