OXFORD, AL – The city of Oxford took a step toward enhancing its infrastructure by hosting a community engagement town hall, “Oxford On The Move: A Plan for Bike and Pedestrian Routes,” on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Oxford City Hall. The event, held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., provided residents with an opportunity to voice their opinions on potential bicycle and pedestrian routes throughout the city.

The initiative is a collaboration between the city of Oxford, Historic Main Street Oxford, Calhoun County Metropolitan Planning Organization, and Sain Associates. The town hall aimed to gather public input and assess possibilities for expanding pedestrian and bicycle connectivity across the city.

“This town hall is designed to gather public input on pedestrian and bike connections throughout the city and is part of ongoing efforts to improve those connections across Oxford,” said Historic Main Street Oxford Director Hunter Gentry. He emphasized that this event marked the beginning of a technical study, with no immediate guarantee of implementation. “I urge all our citizens to attend this meeting and add their important voices to this exciting new venture for our city,” Gentry added.

During the event, attendees were encouraged to mark maps identifying existing pedestrian and bicycle routes as well as areas where new pathways are desired. The city is proactively planning for potential funding opportunities, ensuring readiness when resources become available for walking and biking amenities.

The study aims to evaluate opportunities for bicycle and pedestrian connections across local roadways in Oxford. Potential connections under consideration include routes linking downtown Oxford to the Oxford Civic Center, the Oxford Civic Center to Choccolocco Park, the Chief Ladiga Trail to downtown Oxford, and Hobson City to Main Street.

Application

Residents who were unable to attend the town hall can still participate in the planning process by completing the community engagement survey online at https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/c347d911e73a4b859a71512f7f3efec5. The city encourages all community members to provide their input and help shape the future of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in Oxford.
