Oxford Parks and Recreation to Host “Pollinators in Focus” at Choccolocco Park

OXFORD PARKS AND RECREATION POLLINATOR EVENT

OXFORD — The Oxford Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the community to take part in Pollinators in Focus, a free event designed to celebrate pollinators and their importance to Alabama’s environment. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Choccolocco Park.

The family-friendly program is part of the National Recreation and Parks Association’s “Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz,” a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness of pollinator species and their role in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Attendees are encouraged to download the free iNaturalist app to help identify and document bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators found in the park. Every observation uploaded in September from Oxford and surrounding areas contributes to real scientific research and conservation.

Pollinators extend beyond butterflies and bees. In Alabama, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, lizards, and even bats play a vital role in keeping native and agricultural ecosystems productive. The Oxford event will also include crafts, pollinator-themed treats, educational activities, and door prizes from local businesses.

Alabama Power is also a supporter of pollinator education and conservation across the state. The company has established pollinator plots at several Preserves locations and participates in initiatives like the Great Southeast Pollinator Census. Alabama Power also promotes pollinator awareness through its mascot, Louie the Lightning Bug.

Organizers encourage residents to bring a smartphone if they wish to participate in the iNaturalist documentation, but no experience or equipment is required.

Pollinators in Focus begins at 8 a.m. on Sept. 20 at Choccolocco Park and is free to attend. For details, contact Ashley Bias at the Oxford Parks and Recreation Department at 256-832-1561 or ashley.bias@oxfordal.gov, or visit the Oxford Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
