Oxford, AL – In recognition of Autism Awareness Month and World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2025, the Oxford Police Department (OXPD) is highlighting its Special Needs Alert Program (SNAP). This initiative is designed to enhance the safety and well-being of individuals with special needs by equipping first responders with crucial information before emergencies arise.
SNAP allows Oxford residents to share essential details about family members with special needs, including individuals on the autism spectrum, those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia. By proactively providing this information, families can help ensure that first responders approach situations with the knowledge necessary to create a calm and secure environment.
Residents can easily enroll in SNAP by downloading the Oxford Police Department app, selecting the “Police Services” tab, and completing the “SNAP” form. This form includes critical information such as whether the individual is verbal or non-verbal, sensitivities to lights and sirens, de-escalation techniques, emergency contact numbers, and any additional details that may assist first responders.
Once submitted, the information is forwarded to Calhoun County 911, where both the address and individual are flagged in the system. Dispatchers and officers will have immediate access to these notes if an emergency call is received, ensuring that responders arrive prepared to handle the situation appropriately.
To take advantage of this valuable service, residents can:
- Download the Oxford Police Department app on Apple or Android devices.
- Navigate to the “Police Services” tab.
- Select the “SNAP” tab to fill out the form.
For further information, residents can contact the Oxford Police Department’s non-emergency line at 256-831-3121. By participating in SNAP, families can play a proactive role in fostering a safer, more informed response from emergency personnel, ensuring the well-being of their loved ones.
