Oxford Welcomes a Visiting Mayor and Commissioner at the City Council and Work Session 2/8/22

The work session opened with a congratulations to all the staff for hosting a great celebration for Oxford’s 170th Anniversary.

The next item was to see if there were any questions for the resolutions appearing on tonight’s agenda.  There was a note that on resolution 2022-09 the amount was incorrect.  It was corrected to  $760,068.62.

A note was made to add resolution 2022-10 to the agenda authorizing the Mayor to sign an agreement with Goodman Mills and the city for $72,000.

Work is continue on Friendship Rd and the Leon Smith Parkways. They project is on scheduled and even a little ahead of schedule.

Councilwoman Hubbard wanted to discuss the cost of a recycling building. The price is coming in at approximately $70 a square foot was a concrete pad and metal building. The size they are looking to build is around 7000 square feet. Several location are being looked at that are not in residential areas.

The Mayor also noted he had spoken to Don Hopper about different locations as well. They Mayor also noted he had been approached by a company that does recycling and they are a potential partner for the city.

Councilwoman Hubbard also wanted to discuss the possibility of a dog park new pet friendly hotels. She thinks this would be a good benefit for those that travel with their pets.  It was also noted that they has been discussion with moving forward with the pet adoption center and having a dog park near that location. There would also be a water detention pond near this area also. The Mayor has seen preliminary plans, but nothing is concrete and once a plan is formalized it will be presented to the council to vote on.

      • Resolution No. 2022- 07 – Resolution appointing members to the Zoning Board of Adjustments
      • Resolution No. 2022- 08 – Resolution authorizing a one time appropriation to the Oxford Water Works and Sewer Board from the CARES Funds in the amount of $900,000.00
      • Resolution No. 2022- 09 – Resolution authorizing a one time appropriation to the Health Care Authority from the CARES Funds in the amount of $760068.62
    • Resolution No. 2022- 10 Motion for the Mayor to sign an agreement between Goodwin Mills and the city in the amount of $72,000.00 – Unanimously Approved
  • Council Comments/Reports
    • Councilman Spurlin wanted to thank Hunter Gentry and the Oxford Arts Council for all they do and for putting together the 170th Anniversary Party.
    • Council Waits wanted to thank Commissioner Danny Spears for attending the meeting. He is an Oxford resident and they appreciate his involvement.
  • Mayor’s Comments
    • The Mayor wanted to thank Hunter Gentry and the Arts Council as well as all the staff for and amazing on the celebration.
    • He wanted to also note the only bad thing about Danny Shears coming Commissioner was losing him on many Oxford boards.
    • The Mayor also wanted to thank Mayor Wayne Willis for attending the meeting. He noted Mayor Willis is the spokesmen for the mayors in Calhoun County and he does a great job representing them.
  • Set Public Hearings for February 22, 2022, to consider the following requests which were approved by the Oxford Planning Commission at their January 4, 2022 meeting:
    • Zoning request from Janet Brittain to rezone property located at 410 Dodson Street from Planned Development District (PD) to Residential District (R-1)
    • Zoning request from PAC Enterprises LLC (Stan Bush) to rezone property located at 1828 Division Drive from Residential District (R-1) to Light Manufacturing District (M-1)
    • Zoning request from PAC Enterprises LLC (Stan Bush) to rezone property located at 1951 Barry Street from General Business District (GB) to Light Manufacturing District (M-1)
    • Zoning request from Shawn Curry to rezone property located at 5420 U. S. Highway 78 West from Neighborhood Shopping Center District (NSC) to Agricultural District (AG)
  • Visitors
    • A representative from the Health Authority waned to note how much they appreciate the support from the council. He also wanted to note they are receiving more COVID infusions and again thank the council for their support.
    • Mayor Wayne Willis spoke to say how grateful he was to work with all the mayors and be their spokesperson. He also wanted to state if his run to Senate for District 12 is successful he looks forward to working with the city of Oxford, the Mayor, and the city council.
    • David Mayfield wanted to ask a followup for his wife who could not attend. She wanted to know when the sewer on Rocky Creek Rd would be fixed. *It was noted the this issue is being looked at per the Mayor.
