Calhoun County, AL – Alexander adds ASWA’s top award to postseason list, gives Oxford a trifecta of top award winners in basketball, football and baseball.
MONTGOMERY — Joel Van Meter warned everyone who would listen five years ago. Oxford’s long-time coach promised that Jaylen Alexander, then an eighth-grader, would do big things.
Six weeks after leading Oxford to its first Final Four appearance in boys’ basketball and state championship in basketball, Alexander has been voted as the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Mr. Basketball.
The ASWA announced top award winners for basketball during today’s banquet at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel. Alexander prevailed in a vote of the ASWA’s prep committee.
Alexander becomes the first Mr. Basketball from a school in Calhoun County.
He also gives Oxford the trifecta of top awards for the three most consumed boys sports: one Mr. Basketball, one Mr. Football (Roc Thomas in 2013) and two Mr. Baseballs (Matthew Maniscalco in 1999 and Hayes Harrison in 2023).
Alexander, also the Class 6A player of the year and a Super All-State pick, adds the ASWA’s top award for boys’ basketball to a list that includes Gatorade Player of the Year for Alabama. He was MVP of the Class 6A state tournament and Alabama MVP for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.
The Kansas State commit becomes the most highly decorated basketball player in Calhoun County history.
Alexander averaged 19 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists a game in 2025-26 63. He had steals.
