PELL CITY, AL — On Saturday, May 2, the spotlight shone brightly on Pell City High School as Nate Burch, Director of Choirs at both Pell City High School and Duran Junior High School, was named the 2025 Education Champion of the Year. The award, presented by AmFirst and the Children’s of Alabama INDY Grand Prix, honors exceptional educators who inspire students, foster inclusive learning environments, and leave a lasting mark on their communities.

Burch was selected from numerous nominations submitted by families and students who praised his leadership, creativity, and deep commitment to his students. His efforts have transformed the choir program into a thriving space that not only nurtures musical talent but also builds self-confidence and community.

“He has created a space where judgment is replaced with encouragement,” wrote one nominator. “Students don’t just learn to sing. They learn to believe in themselves.”

Described by his students as a mentor who champions every voice, Burch’s classroom has become a place where all students—regardless of experience or background—feel valued and empowered. His innovative approach to music education has led to increased student engagement, growth in performance opportunities, and a renewed energy within the choir program.

As part of the award, Mr. Burch received a $5,000 classroom grant to support and expand the choir program. The grant will be used to fund student competitions, upgrade classroom tools, and enhance musical resources.

“Mr. Burch is the kind of teacher who reaches beyond the curriculum; he connects with students, builds confidence, and inspires them to shine,” said Kevin Morris, President and CEO of AmFirst. “We are proud to recognize his incredible contributions and commitment to shaping the next generation.”

The Education Champion of the Year program spans 13 counties across Alabama and is designed to celebrate educators who go above and beyond in their roles. It is one of several community initiatives powered by AmFirst to promote education and recognize those who make a daily difference in students’ lives.

With this recognition, Mr. Burch continues to set the bar for excellence in education, proving that with dedication and heart, teachers can change lives one note at a time.
