Austin, defense power Piedmont to dominant showing in winner-take-all game for region title, but Wellborn gets good news after the game.

WELLBORN — Piedmont spent four quarters making news Friday, then Wellborn got good news.
Quarterback Cole Austin accounted for 370 yards in total offense and six touchdowns, and Class 2A No. 5 Piedmont rolled to a 48-6 victory at Wellborn to finish Region 6 play unbeaten and clinch the region title.
Frowns turned upside down quickly in Wellborn’s locker room upon hearing the news of Ohatchee’s 29-22, come-from-behind victory over Gaston. That meant that Wellborn finished second in region play and, like Piedmont, will play its playoff opener at home in two weeks.
Both teams have an open date next week.
