Piedmont Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase, Endangering Child Passenger

Piedmont man leads police on 100 m.p.h. chase with 7-year-old in car

Piedmont, AL – In a harrowing incident on September 28, 2023, a Piedmont man, identified as 36-year-old Spencer Lerone Dudley, found himself facing serious charges of reckless endangerment and felony attempting to elude law enforcement authorities. The charges stem from a high-speed chase that exceeded 100 miles per hour, during which Dudley had a 7-year-old child in his vehicle.

Per Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson, the events leading to Dudley’s arrest began when a gray Dodge Charger was observed driving at a dangerously high rate of speed on US Hwy 278 by a vigilant Piedmont Officer. Concerned for public safety, the officer initiated a traffic stop in response to the excessive speed. However, the vehicle failed to comply, choosing instead to evade law enforcement by accelerating further.

What ensued was a perilous vehicle pursuit, with speeds reaching near 100 miles per hour at various points during the chase. The pursuit was marked by a series of egregious traffic violations, including passing vehicles in no passing zones, putting not only Dudley’s life, the two passengers one a child, and also the lives of other motorists at risk.

Officers continued to pursue the vehicle until it was briefly lost from sight on Old Gnatville Rd. However, their relentless efforts paid off as they located the vehicle behind a residence on Old Gnatville Rd. As they approached the vehicle, officers discovered Spencer Lerone Dudley hiding behind a propane tank.

Dudley readily admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and disclosed that there were two individuals, including a 7-year-old juvenile, accompanying him during the reckless chase.

In response to his actions, Dudley was promptly arrested and charged with Felony Attempting to Elude and Reckless Endangerment, with two counts of the latter. Additionally, he received multiple traffic citations for his dangerous driving behavior. Subsequently, Dudley was transported to the Calhoun County Jail on September 29, 2023, with a total bond set at $42,000.

Chief Johnson emphasized that there had been a substantial volume of complaints regarding Dudley’s activities, and law enforcement authorities acted swiftly to address and resolve the matter. This incident underscores the crucial role of law enforcement in ensuring public safety and holding individuals accountable for reckless behavior that endangers both themselves and the community at large.
