He stated with busy pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic on and around campus, it is important for all of us to place a top priority on safety.  Recently, there have been multiple pedestrians on campus struck by vehicles in cross walks.  He also released basic safety tips to follow:

General Safety

  • Preplan your route.
  • Allow adequate time to arrive to your destination.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Walking

  • Cross the street only at designated crosswalks.
  • Stop, look, and wave at drivers before entering a crosswalk to make sure they see you and you see them.
  • Do not be distracted by electronic devices.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings.

Driving

  • Slow down and observe the posted speed limit.
  • Do not drive while distracted by electronic devices.
  • Park your vehicle in a central location on campus and walk to all classes when possible.
  • Park only in designated parking spaces and in your zone.
  • Do not park where your vehicle impedes/blocks travel lanes and/or roadways.
  • Be sure to lock your vehicle and remove all valuables from plain sight.
  • When backing out of a parking space, turn your head and look closely behind and around all sides of the vehicle

Chief Barton also noted that “Ensuring safety and security is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you for what you do to help keep our campus community safe.”
