Montgomery, AL – In a joint initiative with the Port Authority, Governor Kay Ivey declared on Thursday that the Port of Mobile has contributed a remarkable $98.3 billion to Alabama’s economy, signaling an impressive increase of approximately $13 billion from the previous year’s impact.
The economic impact report, commissioned by the Alabama Port Authority and covering the calendar year 2022, underscores the substantial growth at the Port, showcasing its substantial benefits reaching all 67 counties across the state.
The comprehensive report reveals that the Port, beyond its colossal economic impact, supports a staggering 351,359 jobs in Alabama, equivalent to one out of every seven jobs statewide. These jobs collectively contribute $22.5 billion in income to Alabamians throughout all 67 counties.
Moreover, the Port and its related industries gave back a substantial $2.4 billion in taxes to the state, local governments, and the federal government in 2022 alone.
Governor Ivey emphasized the broad influence of the Port, stating, “While our Gulf Coast port might be called ‘The Port of Mobile,’ what the staggering economic impact number of $98 billion means is that it is really ‘The Port of Alabama.’” She further highlighted the Port’s role in various sectors, including the automotive industry, exports of natural resources, and the transportation of locally-made goods.
Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, John Driscoll, expressed confidence in the Port’s ongoing growth, citing over $1 billion in capital projects currently underway. He emphasized the pivotal role of state investments in achieving this growth and positioning Alabama businesses as global competitors.
State Senator Greg Reed and State House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter echoed their support, recognizing the Port’s influence across diverse industries and geographical regions within the state.
The Port of Mobile’s strategic investments, including the ongoing Phase IV expansion at the container terminal, harbor deepening and widening projects, and plans for logistics facilities and an inland intermodal facility, are expected to contribute to its continued success. These initiatives aim to enhance capabilities, create new opportunities for shippers, and fortify the Port’s position as an economic powerhouse.
