Oxford – Mason Mims passed for 293 yards and four touchdowns, and Oxford handled visiting Huntsville 35-6 on Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season.
It marks Oxford’s first 2-0 start since 2-0, when the Yellow Jackets went on to win their third state title and first in 26 years.
The 2020 and 2021 teams opened against 7A power Thompson, and the 2022 team lost its opener to McAdory.
Oxford’s Camare Hampton caught three touchdown passes, including a 57-yarder. Oxford also scored on a 24-yard Nick Richardson run and D.K. Wilson’s 25-yard catch and run.
Mims completed 22 of 33 passes on the night.
Oxford got seven tackles apiece from Keenan Britt and Donovan Jones, and Britt had a sack.
OHATCHEE 26, WELLBORN 7: An injury-riddled Ohatchee team lost to Wellborn 45-7 this time a year ago, but healthy Ohatchee team turned the tables on “The Hill.”
Nate Jones rushed 28 times for 151 yards, and Jake Roberson completed four of five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown as the Indians improved to 2-0. Roberson also caught a pass for 26 yards.
Jesse Baswell rushed 10 times for 54 yards and two touchdowns, had 28 receiving yards and threw a touchdown pass to Roberson.
Colby Hester caught two passes for 73 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score.
Ohatchee outgained Wellborn 352 yards to 198.
PLEASANT VALLEY 40, DONOHO 0: At Donoho, Pleasant Valley’s Clark Hill rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and Braxton Salster added 89 yards rushing and two scores.
Holt Bentley rushed for 88 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and Jaden Sparks rushed for 75 yards.
Nic Acker intercepted two passes, and Hill intercepted one.
Samuel Duncan had a fumble recovery, and Grey Knight forced the fumble. Hunter Sparks returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown.
JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 27, TABERNACLE 8: At Gardendale, Noah Lee completed 14 of 24 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown as JCA improved to 3-0.
Travis Barnhill rushed 12 times for 68 yards and caught three passes for 29 yards and a score.
Jesse Gannaway caught five passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Deon Dupree registered four tackles for loss and a sack, Caleb Stallings had three tackles and a fumble recovery. Moses Averette had five tackles, including a tackle for loss and two sacks.
HANDLEY 55, ST. JAMES 27: Does Handley ever run out of running backs? No.
E.J. Goss rushed for 177 yards and four touchdowns, and quarterback Cannon Kyles accounted for 105 total yards and a touchdown as the Tigers (2-0) rolled over the reigning Class 3A state champion.
Goss, the heir apparent to Clemson-bound Jay Haynes, rushed behind a veteran offensive line for touchdowns of one, 55, 49 and three yards.
Kyles completed five of 14 passes for 94 yards and rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, and Jamarian Heath returned an interception 97 yards for a touchdown.
Handley’s other score came on a Jamarcus Daniel 16-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers rushed for 323 yards and held St. James to 23 rushing yards.
