Preserving the History of Hurt House of Photography in Oxford

Historic Main Street Oxford

This past Friday, Hurt House of Photography caught on fire. Hurt House has been a long-time downtown Oxford business for decades. We are deeply saddened by the loss.
The Snow Street business was based in a late 19th century modified Eastlake Victorian residence formerly occupied by two of Oxford’s leading physicians for their time.
The Snow Street property was built in the 1890s by Dr. John M. Whiteside. It has been rumored that the rear portion of the home was constructed prior to the Civil War. Dr. Whiteside and his wife, Nevada, raised their family in the home for a short period until 1916, when the home was sold to Dr. Mark J. Williams. The small brick structure to the right of the home was used by both Dr. Whiteside and Dr. Williams for their medical offices while residing in the home.
Dr. Williams, a native of White Plains, practiced medicine for over 35 years until his death in late 1939. He was a graduate of Southern Methodist University at Greensboro and Birmingham Medical College.
The attached photos are from the late 1970-early 1980s.
