Washington D.C. – President Donald J. Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law today, marking the first piece of legislation enacted during his presidency and a significant step in immigration enforcement and border security. The bipartisan law, authored by U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Congressman Mike Collins (R-Ga.), represents the most comprehensive immigration enforcement measure passed in nearly 30 years.
The legislation, named after Laken Riley to honor her memory, aims to strengthen immigration enforcement and address crimes committed by illegal immigrants. It mandates U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain undocumented individuals who commit offenses such as theft, burglary, larceny, shoplifting, assault on law enforcement officers, or crimes resulting in death or serious injury.
“This landmark bill is historic for many reasons, including being the first signed into law by President Trump as the 47th President,” said Senator Britt. “This bipartisan, lifesaving legislation is an incredible first step toward making America safe again and protecting American families. I am proud of the partnerships and leadership that made this law a reality.”
- Expanded Detention Requirements: The law includes provisions from Senator John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) POLICE Act, which broadens the list of offenses covered, and Senator Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) Sarah’s Law, named after Sarah Root, requiring ICE to detain undocumented individuals involved in fatal or severe crimes.
- State Authority: States can now bring civil actions against federal officials who fail to enforce immigration laws or violate those laws.
- Focus on Public Safety: The legislation aims to prevent reoffenses by ensuring that individuals detained for certain crimes remain in custody.
The bipartisan effort included contributions from Senators Ted Budd (R-N.C.), John Thune (R-S.D.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), and Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.). Senator Budd emphasized the message sent by the American people during the last election, highlighting the importance of restoring law and order.
The passage of the Laken Riley Act underscores Senator Britt’s commitment to addressing illegal migration and border security, a top priority she identified at the start of the 119th Congress. She credited the success of the legislation to collaboration across party lines and the dedication of congressional leaders.
“Together, we are delivering real results for the American people,” Senator Britt stated. “I will continue fighting to strengthen border security and protect American families.”
President Trump’s signing of the bill aligns with his administration’s broader agenda to enhance public safety and restore order, marking a significant milestone in his presidency and a turning point in immigration policy.
