Eastabooga, AL – Rainbow Omega recently celebrated a momentous occasion as resident William D. Jones, affectionately known as “Uncle Bill” or “Mr. Bill,” marked his 100th birthday. The celebration extended beyond the organization, as he was honored at the Oxford City Council meeting, where Mayor Alton Kraft proclaimed February 25th as “William D. Jones Day.”
Born in Bristol, Tennessee, in 1925, Mr. Bill was one of seven children raised by Roy and Lula Jones. He lived in Bristol until the age of 60 before finding a home at Rainbow Omega in 2001. Known for his sharp wit and lively spirit, he keeps both residents and staff on their toes, never hesitating to ensure things run smoothly.
A passionate fan of the University of Tennessee and NASCAR, Mr. Bill enjoys watching old westerns, admiring trains, and dining out. His holiday tradition of dressing up as Santa Claus brings joy to staff and fellow residents, as he spreads warmth and laughter wherever he goes.
Family members, including his great-niece Lydia Watkins and niece Elizabeth Jones Hostetter, shared heartfelt memories of Mr. Bill’s impact on their lives. Watkins recalled his infectious happiness, love for Christmas, and remarkable memory. “He amazes me—he remembers everything! You can ask him anything about history, and he’ll know it,” she said.
Hostetter reflected on his adaptability and resilience, calling it “remarkable and humbling.” She recounted fond memories of playing Rook with him and marveled at his ability to “shoot the moon” in a game. She also emphasized his deep faith, which has left a lasting impression on younger generations.
In recognition of his milestone, Rainbow Omega transformed its dining hall into “Uncle Bill’s Diner” for the day. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey presented Mr. Bill with a certificate of recognition, and the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board honored him with a certificate of achievement.
Having outlived all of his siblings, Mr. Bill has reached a milestone no one else in his family has. When asked if he had set a new goal beyond turning 100, his niece jokingly said, “Just that plate of food in front of him.”
As Rainbow Omega and the community continue to celebrate his incredible life, one thing is certain—Mr. Bill’s joy, resilience, and legacy will continue to inspire all who know him.
