Anniston, AL – Alabama Possible is gearing up for a unique event that provides participants with a firsthand experience of the challenges faced by individuals living in poverty. Utilizing the Communality Action Poverty Simulation kit developed by the Missouri Community Action Network (MCAN), this hands-on exercise is set to take place on January 25, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm at The Bridge, Anniston First United Methodist Church, located at 1400 Noble St., Anniston.
The registration deadline for this eye-opening event has been extended until Sunday evening, Jan. 21, providing individuals with one last opportunity to secure a spot. The organizers are particularly eager to fill the remaining slots for participants and are also in need of additional volunteers to ensure the success of the exercise.
The poverty simulation is designed to immerse participants in the day-to-day life of someone living in poverty, offering a profound insight into the systemic barriers they face. This experience sheds light on the emotional and personal impact of living in poverty, often leading to difficult and life-altering decisions.
Funded by a grant, the event is free for participants, and teachers can earn 2.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for their participation. The simulation is comparable to “Your Money, Your Life,” run by the Extension Service for students, and similar exercises conducted by the Chamber and the United Way.
The Calhoun County Chapter of the Alabama New South Coalition (ANSC) secured a grant for this one-time event, emphasizing the importance of reaching individuals who may not have had the opportunity for such an immersive experience. The goal is to engage those who come into contact with low-income individuals or have an impact on policies affecting this demographic.
Interested individuals can register immediately using the provided link or the QR code on the flyer below. For inquiries or to volunteer, please contact Sylvia Fitts, chair of ANSC of Calhoun County, at 256-513-5077 or [email protected].
This event aims to create awareness around the barriers to prosperity in Alabama, and Alabama Possible, a statewide nonprofit organization, encourages community members to participate actively in this impactful initiative. The simulation promises to be an extremely valuable experience, providing a unique perspective on the challenges faced by those living in poverty.
