Revolutionizing Education: Jacksonville State University Unveils Jax MIX – Merging Innovation and eXperience Program

Jax State Unveils New General Education Program

Jacksonville, AL – After an extensive two-year period of research and strategic planning, Jacksonville State University (JSU) has introduced its innovative general education program known as Jax MIX: Merging Innovation and eXperience. This pioneering initiative, believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, incorporates badged microcredentials directly into the general education curriculum.

Vice Provost Staci Stone, leading the effort as part of JSU’s accreditation reaffirmation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, expressed optimism about the program’s potential impact on every undergraduate student at JSU. The revamping and branding of the general education program aim to provide a learner-centered experience, setting JSU apart from other institutions.

A comprehensive survey involving input from the entire campus and feedback from alumni employers was conducted to identify the skills and knowledge most valued by employers. Top priorities, according to representatives from various industries, included ethics, critical thinking, communication, professionalism, creative problem-solving, leadership, diversity, and civic participation.

Jax MIX integrates all state-mandated educational requirements into a new structure, organizing courses into categories such as Experience, Communication, Expression, and Inquiry. Furthermore, the program introduces clusters that allow students to achieve Focus options, forming the basis for badged microcredentials upon completion. Students can earn these microcredentials by attending related events, completing course projects or community service, and reflecting on their activities. The collected microcredential badges will be stored in an e-wallet accessible even after graduation.

Microcredentials will be available in areas such as Community Engagement, Environmental Stewardship, Ethical Leadership, Global Connections, and Media Literacy. JSU President Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. emphasizes that these courses contribute to a robust educational foundation, preparing students for specialized study while fostering informed and engaged citizenship.

Jax MIX is set to be implemented in the Fall of 2024, starting with the incoming freshman class. While current students can review their transcripts and discuss plans with advisors to pursue microcredentials, the program offers a flexible and innovative approach to education, garnering enthusiasm from students such as Tierra Thatch, the SGA President, who sees the potential to enhance her resume with microcredentials aligned with her coursework and leadership experiences. Current students are encouraged to explore the program for additional opportunities. For more information, visit the Jax MIX website.
