Morgantown, WV  — Rich Rodriguez is reportedly making his first coaching hires as part of his new role with the West Virginia Mountaineers, bringing familiar faces from Jacksonville State to Morgantown. According to reports, Rodriguez has added Jacksonville State receivers coach Ryan Garrett and tight ends/inside receivers coach Michael Nysewander to his staff, alongside defensive line coach William Green.

While these moves have not been officially announced by West Virginia University, the additions mark the beginning of Rodriguez’s efforts to shape his coaching team. Green, who served as Jacksonville State’s defensive line coach and run game coordinator, brings extensive experience to the Mountaineers.

During Green’s tenure with the Gamecocks, the team compiled an impressive 28-13 record (.683) over four seasons, including an 18-6 record (.750) in Ohio Valley Conference play. Jacksonville State secured back-to-back league titles in 2017 and 2018, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision in both seasons.

Green’s coaching journey began after playing for the University of Florida, where he later became a graduate assistant. He also spent time as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State under Todd Bates, now the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma. Green briefly played professional football, attending training camp with the Cleveland Browns and competing in the Arena Football League.

Rodriguez has indicated that he plans to finalize his coaching staff by January 1, aiming to solidify the Mountaineers’ leadership team before the new year. However, not all former Jacksonville State staff members will be joining him. Offensive coordinator Rod Smith has accepted the same position at Marshall, and running backs coach Rod McDowell is reportedly joining him in Huntington. Meanwhile, long-time Rodriguez assistant Rick Trickett is expected to remain at Jacksonville State as the offensive line coach.

Rodriguez’s early moves highlight his intent to bring continuity and expertise to West Virginia, leveraging the talent of coaches who have previously succeeded under his leadership. Official announcements regarding his staff are expected in the coming weeks.
