Saks, AL – On Monday, April 7, 2025, the School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to Saks High School was alerted that one of the students may be in possession of a loaded handgun. The SRO, working with the High School staff, was able to quickly identify the student and make contact with them. During the contact between the student and SRO, a loaded Glock handgun was located, and the student was immediately taken into custody.
Sheriff Falon Hurst stated, “This is a situation where the system worked the way it’s supposed to. A dangerous situation was identified, and SRO was notified, and the gun was seized.” The student was cooperative with the SRO, and there was no incident during the arrest. The Sheriff does not believe the gun was brought to the school with the intention of using it on school grounds.
The Calhoun Journal spoke with Calhoun County School Superintendent, Tony Willis, who said, “I am proud of our school community for pulling together and protecting our students. We want to always be transparent, and we are happy this incident was resolved quickly and no harm came to any of our students or staff”.
Calhoun County School Board of Education President, Michael Webb, also spoke with us to say, “I’m very thankful for our school board and the way that they have worked together to ensure that we have a school resource officer on every campus. We are very thankful for the professionalism and the way that those guys do their job. They’re always present, they’re always active, and they do a phenomenal job. I’m also thankful to our new sheriff, only a few days on the job and Sherriff Hurst is doing a great job of communicating with us and helping us to build an even stronger partnership than we already had, which Sheriff Wade always made us a priority in everything that he did and so we’re only continuing the things that have been started under him and Sheriff Amerson and continuing to make them better.”
According to Sheriff Hurst, the student was transported to the Calhoun County Detention Center and was processed. The juvenile was charged with Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Firearm, a misdemeanor.
