Calhoun County, AL – Oxford tops Montverde (Fla.) Academy to complete sweep through Perfect Game Showdown at Hoover; Ohatchee softball wins four at Saks Wildcat Classic

Inclement weather put Oxford’s involvement in the Calhoun County baseball tournament off until Monday. No conflict, no problem in the Perfect Game National High School Showdown. Trace Adams’ two-out single scored Roby Brooks from second base to put Oxford up 8-7, and the Yellow Jackets beat Montverde (Fla.) Academy 8-7 in Saturday’s final at the Hoover Met. Brooks finished the job on the mound, working the final three innings for the win. He allowed no hits, no runs and no walks with five strikeouts. Adams also doubled and drove in three runs. Carter Johnson had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs. Hudson Gilman went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, and Peyton Watts tripled and scored a run.

Bear and Sons

Oxford (8-1) came into Saturday’s play having beaten Buford (Ga.) 6-5 and West Forsyth (Ga.) 10-1 on Friday then beat Lewisburg (Miss.) 3-0 to reach the final. Watts and Eli Bozeman combined to throw a no-hitter against Lewisburg.. Watts worked the final six innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Johnson, Nick Richadson, Hayes Harrison, Caleb Robertson and Tide Gann each had one of Oxford’s five hits. Johnson hit a double. Gilman, Adams and Robertson each had an RBI. “We had a great team effort all weekend long,” Oxford coach Wes Brooks said. “My hat’s off to the folks at Perfect Game for putting on such an outstanding, first-class event with some big-time talented teams across the country. Thanks to our administration that worked hard behind the scenes to allow our boys to participate. “Coaches had a great plan. Players executed the plan.  Love those boys!  Seventeen two-strike at bats in the finals and only one strikeout. We gave up six runs in first three innings and held them scoreless in the last three.”

PEPPERELL (Ga.) 5, PIEDMONT 3: Jonah Pike, Kale Austin, Brodie Homesley and Sloan Smith each had one of Piedmont’s four hits. Smith had the Bulldogs’ lone RBI. Homesley, Kale Austin, Cole Wilson, Jake Austin and Pike all saw action on the mound, allowing nine hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts.

Softball

Ohatchee came away with four victories and a loss in the Saks Wildcat Classic at Woodland Park, beating Lincoln 7-6 in a three-inning game, Jacksonville 5-0 in five, Anniston 11-1 in three and Maples (Ill.) 6-0 in five and falling 5-4 to Woodland. Against Jacksonville, Hannah Fitch pitched a two-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts. Whitney McFry led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Alanah Fitch went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Carli Fritts and Alexis Phillips had Jacksonville’s hits, both singles. Against Lincoln, Savannah Reaves went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Ellie Carden was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI.

Carden doubled home the game-ending run after Breanna Martin was hit by a pitch. Hannah Fitch singled and drove in two runs. Ohatchee had five hits against Anniston, and Carden had two. Alyssa Davis and Alanah Fitch each had an RBI, against Maples, Hannah Fitch threw a four-hit shutout, drove in a run and scored a run. McFry also singled with an RBI. Alanah Fitch doubled and scored a run. Against Woodland, Alanah Fitch had a hit and two RBIs, and McFry singled and drove in a run. [read more sports stories….]
