Senator Katie Britt Joins Bipartisan Effort to Recognize Law Enforcement During National Police Week

U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Colleagues Introduce Resolutions Supporting Law Enforcement in Honor of National Police Week

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers this week in introducing multiple Senate resolutions in recognition of National Police Week, held from May 12 to 17. These efforts aim to honor the nation’s law enforcement officers and promote increased support for their safety and well-being.

Senator Britt, along with Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and 10 other Senate colleagues, introduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing law enforcement officers for their service and commitment to public safety. The resolution also calls for enhanced health and safety measures for those working in law enforcement.

“As hostility toward police officers grows, threats to their safety increase. We must support those who risk their lives daily to protect our communities,” said Senator Cassidy in a statement.

In a separate bipartisan effort, Senator Britt joined Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and a coalition of 78 senators in introducing a resolution officially designating May 12 through 17 as National Police Week. The resolution also honors the 234 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2024. The Senate passed the resolution by unanimous consent.

Chairman Grassley noted, “Law enforcement officers in Iowa and across the nation work tirelessly to protect and serve our communities. This week, and every week, we should give our thanks to the brave men and women in blue.”

Senator Britt emphasized the importance of recognizing law enforcement personnel, stating, “Those who wear the uniform and stand with integrity to protect the liberties we cherish so deeply are owed a great debt of gratitude by our nation.”

In addition to her recent work on National Police Week, Senator Britt has sponsored and supported legislation focused on law enforcement safety and immigration enforcement. Notably, in January, her bill S.5, the Laken Riley Act, was signed into law. The legislation includes an amendment by Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas), based on the POLICE Act, which broadens the scope of offenses related to assault on law enforcement officers.

Britt also co-sponsored the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act with Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas). This bill would make it a federal crime to flee from agents or officers performing their duties. According to Britt, the legislation aims to prevent future tragedies like the death of Agent Raul Gonzalez, who died while serving in the line of duty.

National Police Week is an annual observance paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement officers. It includes various events across the country to honor those who have died in the line of duty and to support the men and women who continue to serve.
