Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) issued a statement today after meeting with Jeff Denard, an Alabama steelworker, volunteer firefighter, and foster parent from Decatur, who was invited by First Lady Melania Trump to attend President Trump’s joint address to Congress.
Senator Britt expressed her appreciation for First Lady Trump’s invitation, emphasizing Denard’s representation of Alabama’s steelmaking heritage. She highlighted how the state’s contributions to the steel industry strengthen national security and foster “Made in America” excellence.
“I am incredibly grateful to First Lady Melania Trump for extending an invitation to an Alabamian, Jeff Denard, to attend President Trump’s Joint Session to Congress,” Senator Britt said. “Alabama’s steelmaking heritage continues to strengthen our state and our national security capabilities through Made in America excellence. It was a real honor meeting Jeff and his wonderful wife Nicole today. They exemplify the very best of Alabama, from hard work to generosity and servant leadership.”
The Senator emphasized that Denard’s inclusion in the event represents the hardworking individuals the Trump Administration has sought to protect. “Jeff’s inclusion is emblematic of the hardworking men and women the Trump Administration is fighting to protect,” she said. “I am proud to be a partner to President Trump in his efforts to onshore critical supply chains, drive up real wages for U.S. families, and usher in a new era of American prosperity.”
Britt has long been an advocate for Alabama’s steelworkers and the manufacturing industry. In her first term, she visited Nucor’s Tuscaloosa mill to personally thank the workers who contribute to Alabama’s leadership in global manufacturing.
Additionally, Senator Britt has cosponsored legislation like the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act, aimed at strengthening U.S. trade laws, combating unfair trade practices, and protecting American workers—especially in industries like steel that face significant trade challenges. Upon the bill’s reintroduction, Britt reiterated her commitment to fighting for American workers. “I will continue fighting in the Senate to protect American workers, properly enforce U.S. trade agreements, and strengthen our national security,” she stated.
