WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) has been named Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on the Senate Committee on Appropriations for the 119th Congress. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will serve as the subcommittee’s Ranking Member.
The Homeland Security Subcommittee oversees the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Secret Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Transportation Security Administration. Senator Britt previously served as the subcommittee’s Ranking Member during the 118th Congress.
“Given the unprecedented border crisis and the rising threats to our homeland we’ve faced under the Biden-Harris Administration, this is a critical role at a critical time for our country,” Senator Britt said. “As Chair of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security, I will have the opportunity to ensure our subcommittee focuses on securing our border and making America safer. It is a tremendous honor and responsibility that I do not take lightly.”
Senator Britt emphasized her commitment to addressing pressing issues at the border and ensuring federal resources are allocated effectively.
Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) also expressed confidence in Senator Britt’s leadership, highlighting the importance of the subcommittee’s work. “The Homeland Security Subcommittee holds jurisdiction over a wide range of important federal agencies and programs, including those to secure our borders, strengthen Coast Guard capabilities, and combat the transnational criminal organizations that flood our communities with fentanyl and other illegal narcotics,” Senator Collins said.
In addition to her role as Chair, Senator Britt will serve on several other subcommittees: Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies; Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies; Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies; Energy and Water Development; and State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs.
During her tenure on the Senate Appropriations Committee in the 118th Congress, Senator Britt focused on returning federal funds to benefit Alabama residents. She has pledged to continue advocating for Alabama’s interests in the 119th Congress.
