Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) announced her appointment as Chairman of the Housing, Transportation, and Community Development Subcommittee on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs for the 119th Congress. The subcommittee oversees key areas, including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Federal Housing Administration (FHA), and issues related to affordable housing, transit, and urban development.
Addressing the growing housing crisis, Senator Britt stated, “Our nation is facing an affordable housing crisis. Inflation, paired with low inventory and significant over-regulation, has put access to housing and homeownership even further out of reach for hardworking Americans.” She emphasized her commitment to exploring innovative solutions to increase housing availability, reduce regulatory burdens, and improve efficiency within federal housing and transit agencies.
Britt highlighted the unique challenges faced by rural communities, particularly in her home state of Alabama. “Rural communities have been particularly impacted,” she noted. “I will continue to promote legislative solutions that spur economic development and drive investment in both our urban and rural areas. Each and every U.S. citizen deserves access to affordable housing, reliable transit, and the ability to achieve their American Dream.”
Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) expressed confidence in Britt’s leadership, stating, “Our Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development will be critical to addressing our nation’s housing crisis. I look forward to working with Subcommittee Chairman Britt to ensure the committee is at the forefront of legislation to increase access to affordable housing, promote economic opportunity, and uplift all Americans.”
Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.), who will serve as Ranking Member of the subcommittee, also voiced her enthusiasm for bipartisan collaboration. “Without a safe, decent, and affordable place to live, nothing in your life works,” she said. “I’m excited to keep working on solutions alongside new Chair Katie Britt.”
In addition to her new role, Senator Britt has been appointed to serve on the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection and the Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance, and Investment.
This leadership position positions Senator Britt as a key voice in addressing critical housing and urban development issues affecting both rural and urban communities across the nation.
