U.S. Senator Katie Britt Highlights Border Crackdown Under Trump Administration, Discusses Cartels’ Role in Fentanyl Trafficking

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) participated in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled “The Thin Blue Line Protecting America from the Cartels,” which focused on the challenges U.S. law enforcement agencies face in combating transnational drug cartels. The hearing featured testimony from Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Matthew Allen, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent Jason Stevens, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Assistant Director of the Criminal Investigative Division Jose Perez.

During her questioning, Senator Britt emphasized the increase in drug seizures at ports of entry under previous border enforcement strategies, asking HSI Special Agent Stevens if that aligned with his experience. Stevens affirmed this, noting a rise in cocaine-related cases and seizures.

Britt also addressed the rise in fentanyl-related deaths, highlighting the ongoing national crisis. She inquired about the estimated number of cartel and gang members operating within the U.S. FBI Assistant Director Perez responded that the number is “well into the thousands.”

The senator probed further into the relationship between drug cartels and domestic gangs. DEA Special Agent Allen explained that cartels frequently rely on U.S. street gangs for retail distribution and other criminal operations.

In discussing the international supply chain for synthetic drugs, Senator Britt asked how the U.S. might disrupt the influx of fentanyl precursors, particularly from China. Special Agent Stevens referenced Operation Chain Breaker, pointing out that shipments under $800 are not subject to customs inspections, making it easier to import drug-related equipment.

Special Agent Allen expressed concern about the growing threat of combining drugs in ways that may reduce the effectiveness of Narcan, the medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

To conclude, Senator Britt asked what actions should be taken to target the financial networks that support cartel operations. FBI Assistant Director Perez called for more accountability from financial institutions and additional law enforcement resources to track and dismantle those networks.

The hearing served as part of ongoing congressional oversight into the U.S. response to international drug trafficking and domestic drug abuse.
