Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) continues to highlight what she calls the serious national security risks associated with the ongoing crisis at the United States’ southern border. Senator Britt, alongside Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), has been advocating for a classified, all-member Senate briefing on the escalating threats from radical Islamic terror groups, including ISIS-K, an offshoot of ISIS primarily based in Afghanistan.
Seventy days ago, Senators Britt and Graham sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) requesting this briefing. Despite the urgency of their request, no briefing has yet been scheduled.
Recent news reports have intensified the call for action. Just yesterday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported the arrest of eight foreign nationals with alleged ties to ISIS who had entered the U.S. illegally via the southern border. These individuals had traveled to major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, underscoring the potential threats posed by border security vulnerabilities.
In response to these developments, Senator Britt reiterated the critical need for a bipartisan effort to address these security concerns. “Seventy days ago, Senator Graham and I called for an all-member classified briefing on the rising threat of ISIS-K and other terror organizations against our homeland. Yesterday’s reporting confirmed our warnings – the porous southern border is putting every American in danger. Thankfully, incredible law enforcement officers, including ICE personnel, arrested these individuals before they could harm innocent Americans. This should be an urgent wake-up call to people on both sides of the aisle. I continue to call on Senator Schumer to schedule a classified briefing for all Senators on the rising threat of radical Islamic terror groups taking advantage of the ongoing border crisis,” said Senator Britt.
In their April letter, Senators Britt and Graham highlighted the consequences of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which, according to many experts, has created new threats and transformed the country into a safe haven for terrorist groups. They emphasized the ongoing danger posed by ISIS-K, citing recent attacks in Iran and Russia and thwarted plans in Germany and the Netherlands as evidence of the group’s global operational capabilities and intent.
Senator Britt’s call for a classified briefing aims to ensure that all members of the Senate are fully informed of the threats and prepared to take necessary actions to protect the American homeland.
