Senators Introduce Resolution Declaring October 10 as ‘American Girls in Sports Day’

U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Marsha Blackburn Fight to Protect Women and Girls in Sports

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), joined by a coalition of Senate colleagues, have introduced a resolution to designate October 10 as ‘American Girls in Sports Day.’ The initiative seeks to celebrate the achievements of female athletes and underscore the importance of Title IX, the landmark legislation that has protected opportunities for women in sports for over 50 years.

The resolution aims to honor the contributions of female athletes and advocates for ensuring fair competition and safety for women and girls in sports.

“For daughters like mine and future generations, we need to celebrate and protect women and girls in sports,” said Senator Britt. “I will fight against any assault on Title IX, which for decades has allowed girls and women to have the opportunity to compete safely and fairly. I am grateful for Senator Blackburn’s leadership and will continue working with my colleagues to ensure fairness for women and girls.”

Application

Senator Blackburn emphasized the significance of preserving opportunities and safety for female athletes. “Young women across the country have suffered injuries, faced sexual harassment, and lost accolades because they were forced to share spaces designed for women with men,” she said. “The vast majority of Americans agree athletes should only be allowed to compete on teams that correspond with their biological sex. We must put an end to this assault on women once and for all.”

The resolution, introduced during the 118th Congress, was blocked by Senate Democrats. However, Senators Britt and Blackburn remain committed to the cause, highlighting the bipartisan recognition of Title IX’s role in advancing opportunities for women and girls in sports.

Co-Sponsors of the Resolution
The resolution is co-sponsored by 30 senators, including Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), among others.

The introduction of ‘American Girls in Sports Day’ reflects ongoing national debates about fairness and equality in athletics, as lawmakers continue to advocate for protecting the rights and opportunities of female athletes.
