Jacksonville, AL – Sherry Holyfield Laster has officially announced her candidacy for re-election to the Jacksonville City Council, aiming to continue her service in Place 4. First elected in 2019, Laster is seeking a second term focused on collaboration, smart development, and meeting the evolving needs of Jacksonville residents.
A longtime community member, Laster originally moved to Jacksonville in 1983 to attend Jacksonville State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She now owns a local small business and works as a cosmetology instructor at the Calhoun County Career Academy, helping prepare students for careers in the beauty industry.
Laster has been actively involved in a range of community-focused initiatives during her time on the council. She has supported programs benefiting local youth and families, including the Boys & Girls Club of Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Parks and Recreation Department, and Habitat for Humanity. She also participated in activities supporting Jacksonville High School, Kitty Stone Elementary, and JSU.
Notably, Laster helped introduce Jacksonville’s official city app, aimed at enhancing public access to city services. She also played a role in organizing the city’s annual Back-to-School Free Haircuts event and other outreach efforts to engage with residents. Her recent certification from the Alabama League of Municipalities highlights her continued dedication to professional development in municipal governance.
“My goal has always been to serve with transparency, integrity, and accessibility,” Laster stated. “The work we’ve done as a council has strengthened our city, and I’m excited to continue being part of Jacksonville’s growth and progress.”
Laster and her husband, Lyndon J. Laster—a retired U.S. Army veteran and federal law enforcement officer—have raised two children in Jacksonville. Their daughter, Kalyn, serves as an admissions counselor at JSU, while their son, Kennedy, is a criminal justice major and corrections specialist with the Jacksonville Police Department.
As she launches her re-election campaign, Laster says her priorities remain centered on supporting economic growth, supporting Jacksonville High School and city schools, promoting JSU and our youth, and enhancing city services.
“There’s still more work to be done, and with your continued support, I look forward to building on the progress we’ve made together,” Laster said. “Let’s keep working for a stronger, safer, and more connected Jacksonville.”
