Significant Progress Made on Chief Ladiga Trail Extension in Anniston

Chief Ladiga update

Anniston, AL – The much-anticipated extension of the Chief Ladiga Trail continues to take shape, with construction showing steady progress since the groundbreaking in April 2024. The trail, once completed, will extend 6.5 miles from Anniston’s Multimodal Amtrak Station to connect seamlessly with Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, forming a 105-mile continuous paved pedestrian pathway.

Here’s a look at the key advancements achieved between December 2024 and January 2025:

Grading and Drainage at 47th Street

Construction crews have made substantial improvements at 47th Street. Grading efforts created an at-grade crossing to enhance visibility and safety for trail users. Additionally, a precast box culvert was installed to improve drainage, channeling runoff effectively to protect the trail from water damage.

11th Street Bridge Work

Progress at the 11th Street bridge has been marked by the successful integration of retrofitted abutments with existing bridge walls. This work, carried out by X-Roads Construction, ensures a seamless, durable connection that will benefit both pedestrians and cyclists.

Cane Creek Crossing Developments

At the Cane Creek bridge crossing, crews have backfilled the newly constructed abutments with compacted embankments. To prevent erosion during potential flood events, Class 2 Rip Rap has been installed on the slopes. The bridge structure is scheduled to be set in place later this month.

Final Grading and Landscaping

Trail sections with completed asphalt paving are now receiving finishing touches, including slope grading, topsoil application, and grass planting. These efforts aim to enhance the trail’s appearance while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Once finished, the trail will connect Anniston with the existing Chief Ladiga Trail and Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, creating one of the longest paved pedestrian pathways in the United States. The extension not only promises increased recreational opportunities but also positions the region as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The project is a collaborative effort by the City of Anniston and construction partners, with an emphasis on safety, durability, and environmental stewardship. Updates on the trail’s progress can be found on the City of Anniston’s official website.
