Fruithurst, AL – A single-vehicle crash occurred at around 9:42 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, resulting in the loss of a Talladega man’s life. Roy E. Baggett, 63, suffered fatal injuries when the 2008 Sterling tractor-trailer he was driving overturned, veered off the road, and collided with a bridge railing. Baggett was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident unfolded on U.S. 78 near Old Georgia Road, located about four miles south of Fruithurst in Cleburne County. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division responded promptly to the scene.
According to preliminary reports, Baggett’s vehicle left the roadway before overturning and crashing into the bridge railing. Emergency services were dispatched immediately, but tragically, Baggett succumbed to his injuries, and he was pronounced deceased at the crash site.
Troopers with the ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this time, no further details about the incident have been released.
The U.S. 78 stretch near Old Georgia Road was temporarily impacted as authorities worked to manage the aftermath of the accident and conduct their investigation.
