WASHINGTON – President Donald J. Trump announced Tuesday that U.S. Space Command will relocate its permanent headquarters to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. The decision restores the Air Force’s original 2021 selection of Huntsville as the preferred site, a process that had been reversed under the Biden administration in 2023.

The announcement marks the conclusion of a years-long debate over the basing of Space Command, with Huntsville and Colorado Springs, Colorado, among the top candidates. Multiple reviews, including from the Department of Defense Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office, previously found that Redstone Arsenal ranked as the most cost-effective and strategically advantageous option.

Background on the Selection Process

In January 2021, the U.S. Air Force identified Huntsville as its preferred location for Space Command after evaluating six finalist sites. That decision was later reconsidered under President Joe Biden, who announced Colorado as the location in 2023. Independent reviews concluded that Huntsville scored higher in both evaluation and selection phases, and questions were raised about political considerations influencing the Colorado decision.

In 2025, the Air Force reevaluated and reaffirmed Huntsville as its preferred location. Tuesday’s announcement makes the move official.

Elected officials in Alabama welcomed the decision. U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (AL-03), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, called the move a reaffirmation of national security priorities, noting that “this basing decision has been affirmed and reaffirmed by multiple agencies and officials.”

Governor Kay Ivey described the announcement as a validation of the state’s longstanding preparations, saying Huntsville “remains ready today to not only welcome Headquarters, but to welcome all of the military personnel and their families.”

U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) also praised the outcome, emphasizing Alabama’s aerospace and defense capabilities and thanking the delegation for bipartisan efforts to advocate for Huntsville.

Broader Significance

Supporters of the decision argue that Huntsville’s aerospace infrastructure, workforce, and cost-effectiveness make it the best choice for Space Command’s long-term mission. Redstone Arsenal is already home to several defense agencies, including the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command and the Missile Defense Agency.

Critics of the 2023 reversal to Colorado previously raised concerns that the change undermined military readiness and increased costs. With the latest announcement, supporters say the issue has been resolved in favor of the Air Force’s initial merit-based evaluation.

The relocation is expected to strengthen Huntsville’s role as a hub for the nation’s space and defense industries, further cementing its nickname, the “Rocket City.”
