Spotlight on Local Artist: Severe Franswa

Severe Franswa

Jacksonville, AL – Severe Franswa is a local artist who attended Jacksonville State University. He goes by the artist name Severe Threats (pronounced Threets). The Calhoun Journal had an opportunity to talk to Mr. Franswa and discuss who he is as an artist. The first thing he notes was that he likes helping people when he can. He is also working toward a goal of having a studio in the near future to help meet his personal and professional goals. He has sold paintings in Colorado, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio and of course Alabama. He likes to use different mediums such as water colors and oils. He spoke very highly of his time at JSU. This shouldn’t comes as a surprise as his great great Uncle is Earnest Stone, former JSU president.

Art by Severe FranswaWhen asked why he loved to create art, he explained that art was his form of self-expression. Mr. Franswa is autistic and he is very open about this. Art is a way to showcase his thoughts and feelings in a tangible way.

When asked about the people who have inspired him, he stated his mother is the first person he thinks of because she has always told him that he can do anything he wanted to. His friend, Carolyn Spivey, also inspired him since he was little. He wanted to also be sure to include his professors at JSU who also inspired him, said he could paint anything he wanted to, and encouraged him to keep on painting. He did have an office in Ramona Wood Hall during the time he was at JSU, and he stated he really enjoyed that because he was next door to, “My friend who also inspired me, Dr. Larry Beard.” Currently Mr. Franswa has paintings that are in Meehan Hall at JSU as well as the library, Romona Wood Hall, and the art department. He also regularly does paintings for various fundraisers including some though JSU and in Clay County where he currently resides.  His current goal is to keep painting and do bigger things and help someone along the way. He also stated that, “I thank God everyday.”
