Calhoun County, AL – Burns swings the hottest bat as Oxford scores 20 runs en route to area victory at Gadsden City. Munford baseball tops White Plains in extra innings. Weaver, Faith Christian split soccer doubleheader. White Plains sweeps.

GADSDEN — Oxford softball opened Class 6A, Area 12 play with a boom Tuesday.

Bear and Sons

Ashlyn Burns homered, tripled and drove in five runs as the Yellow Jackets downed Gadsden City 20-5.

Oxford’s day included a nine-run third inning and seven-run fifth.

The Yellow Jackets (2-5) also got a double and three RBIs from Kaelyn Crossley. She also pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Emma Tim-Becerra went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Reagan Sanders singled and drove in two runs.

Oxford also benefited from 17 walks. Adajiah Wilson, Tims-Becerra, Berkley Mooney, Jayla Jackson, Burns, Crossley and Chloe Hulsey walked two times apiece.

Baseball

MUNFORD 8, WHITE PLAINS 4: Munford scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to break the tie.

Mason Brewer hit a two-run double, one of his two doubles on the day, and later scored on a fly ball in the Munford eighth. Alex Petty hit an RBI double and finished the day with two RBIs.

Justin Nichols doubled and drove in two runs, and David Pettus had a single and two RBIs.

Austin Wynn went 3-for-5, including a double, and scored three runs.

Petty pitched the first five innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Brayden Nichols got the win in relief, striking out five batters in three innings of work,

White Plains’ Paul Laube went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Soccer

WEAVER GIRLS 4, FAITH CHRISTIAN 0: Weaver’s Lena Johannson and Erionna Richmond scored two goals apiece.

FAITH CHRISTIAN BOYS 2, WEAVER 0: Faith goalie Ethan Taft recorded his first shutout. Striker Mason Blackstone scored a goal on Bruce Burnham’s assist, and Joseph Carroll scored on a direct kick.

WHITE PLAINS BOYS 13, CLEBURNE COUNTY 3: Brandon Mendoza, Geymar Perez, Catcher Jenkins, Silas Strickland and Caleb Goode scored for White Plains.

WHITE PLAINS GIRLS 5, CLEBURNE COUNTY 1: White Plains’ Lorali McKenzie scored four goals, and Emma Smith scored one.
