Calhoun County, AL – Williams era as White Plains’ softball coach starts with a victory at Piedmont; Oxford, Alexandria and Ohatchee come away with victories

 

Leighton Arnold homered, doubled, drove in two runs and pitched a complete game as White Plains opened the Tiffany Williams’ era by beating Piedmont 5-2 in prep softball action Tuesday. Williams is the Wildcats’ first-year head coach, taking over after Rachel Ford stepped down in May to spend more time with family. Arnold went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. In the circle, she spread out six hits over seven innings and struck out 10 batters. The Wildcats also got a home run and two RBIs from Callie Richardson and doubles from Cassidy Arnold and Kristen Rhodes.

For Piedmont, Savannah Smith with 1-for-3 with a triple and scored a run. Cacey Brothers went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI. Ava Pope was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

OHATCHEE 20, SAKS 4: Ohatchee erupted for 14 hits with a nine-run rally in the fifth inning and an eight-run second. Ellie Carden led the attack, going 3-for-4 with a triple, four runs and three RBIs. Whitney McFry and Alanah Fitch each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Fitch scored three runs and McFry two.

Lexi Thomas went 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Hannah Fitch struck out five batters over four innings for the win. Saks’ Ava Snead went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Alayah Christopher doubled and scored a run.

OXFORD 9, CLEBURNE COUNTY 1: At Heflin, Reagan Sanders and Kaelyn Crossley each pounded out two hits, drove in two runs and scored a run for Oxford. Sanders had a double.

Ashlyn Burns went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Yellow Jackets, and Kenlee Rodgers went 2-for-4 with a run. Adajiah Wilson went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Berkely Mooney worked the final six innings in relief, allowing one hit with 12 strikeouts. Baylie Jones and Jaylie Holt each had a hit for Cleburne County.

ALEXANDRIA 11, ST. CLAIR COUNTY 7: Christian Hess homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the attack for Alexandria. She also scored twice.

Pressley Slaton went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. She also pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and no earned runs with one strikeout. Leadoff hitter Jill Cockrell went 3-for-5 with a triple and four runs, and Clancy Bright was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Allyssa Hunt and Brenlee Sparks each drove in a run. Hunt his a solo home run.

Baseball

ALEXANDRIA 6, GADSDEN CITY 1: Tripp Patterson and Andrew Allen combined to pitch a three-hitter for the Valley Cubs. Patterson worked the first four innings, allowing two hits, no earned runs and no walks with six strikeouts, and Allen allowed one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts in three innings.

Samuel Henegar went 2-for-4 with a triple, run and RBI. Brodie Slaton was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Evan Snow went 2-for-3 with a run. Ian Cartwright had a hit and two RBIs.

WHITE PLAINS 17, RAGLAND 7: Cooper Tinney went 3-for-3 with a triple, six RBIs and two runs for White Plains. He also pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, striking out five batters and allowing one earned run.

Luke Richardson went 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBIs, and Brock Burns was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Flynn Tillison and Paul Laube each had two hits and an RBI. Ragland got two RBIs apiece from Ethan Courney, Skyler Barber and Jabari Thomas. Courtney went 2-for-3 on the day. Barber and Thomas each had a hit.

PELL CITY 9, PIEDMONT 3: Trevor Pike had two of Piedmont’s five hits. McLane Mohon and Kale Austin each drove in a run, and Jake Austin pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

COOSA CHRISTIAN 11, SAKS 7: Tyler Tucker went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI for Saks, and Mason Jairrels went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs. Lajuan Curry, Gage Brown and Christopher Carter each drove in a run.
