A key focus of the program is on fostering a deep understanding of contemporary issues such as internet safety and anti-bullying. Workshops led by experts provide students with essential knowledge and strategies to navigate these challenges effectively, ensuring they are well-equipped to serve as responsible and informed members of their communities.

The Junior Police Academy is just one facet of the forthcoming CREATE center, set to open its doors this fall. Led by CREATE Director Lorie Denton, the center aims to revolutionize workforce development, technology, and innovation in the region. As part of its offerings, CREATE will introduce a Criminal Justice pathway in August 2025, providing high school students with a structured curriculum tailored to their interests and career aspirations.

Speaking to the Calhoun Journal, Lorie Denton expressed enthusiasm for the inaugural phase of the criminal justice pathway, highlighting the collaborative efforts of Sergeant McCorkle and Captain Phipps in engaging with students and generating interest in the program. “This is perfect,” Denton remarked, emphasizing the importance of laying a strong foundation for future generations of law enforcement professionals.

The diverse cohort of participants reflects the inclusive nature of the program, with students ranging from rising 10th graders to recent high school graduates. Their experiences throughout the week have been nothing short of transformative, as they delve into the intricacies of law enforcement procedures and gain firsthand insights into the multifaceted role of a police officer.

As the week progresses, participants continue to be captivated by the immersive learning experiences provided by Sergeant McCorkle and the dedicated team at the Oxford Police Department. From conducting traffic stops to exploring the intricacies of the aviation unit, students are embracing every opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in the field of law enforcement.

The Junior Police Academy serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Oxford Police Department, CREATE, and the local community in nurturing the next generation of law enforcement leaders. With a firm commitment to excellence and innovation, these young participants are poised to make a meaningful impact in the world of criminal justice and beyond.
