Oxford, AL —Despite scorching temperatures, the inaugural Kids Fishing Tournament at Choccolocco Lake drew over 300 children and families this past Saturday. Organized by Thomas Shelton, the event distributed 200 rods and provided a memorable experience for all young participants. Shelton acknowledged the weather challenge and expressed plans to schedule next year’s event during cooler temperatures, ensuring an even more enjoyable experience for families eager to participate in this beloved community tradition.

Choccolocco Lake was stocked with 2,000 pounds of farm-raised catfish, ensuring plenty of opportunities for children to cast lines and reel in their catches. Alongside fishing, attendees enjoyed bounce houses and delicious food, creating a festive atmosphere for all participants.

To ensure everyone’s comfort, families were encouraged to bring coolers, lawn chairs, and fishing gear. Limited fishing supplies were available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a designated area under a covered pavilion for children with special needs.

The Kids Fishing Rodeo was initiated by Thomas Shelton, a local businessman and member of the National Professional Fishing League. “Inspired by the community’s enthusiasm during the NPFL event, I wanted to create an opportunity for kids to get involved,” Shelton remarked. “The response exceeded my expectations, and the support from our sponsors was truly remarkable.”

Mayor Alton Craft expressed appreciation for the event’s positive impact on the city’s youth. “Oxford has always prioritized our young residents,” Mayor Craft emphasized. “We commend Mr. Shelton and all sponsors for enriching the lives of hundreds of youngsters through this engaging outdoor activity.”

The Calhoun Journal proudly supported the event as a sponsor, contributing to a day of wholesome family fun and community spirit in Oxford.
