If it weren’t for the passionate fans and a decision made 77 years ago, the resounding cry at JSU Stadium might be “Go Eagle Owls!” The university’s football legacy dates back to the late 1800s when the team was initially named in honor of a rare predatory bird found near the Arctic Circle – the Eagle Owl.
However, in 1946, a campaign led by devoted fans resulted in a pivotal change. Coach Don Salls, recognizing the need for a mascot with broader appeal, put the decision to a vote. The outcome was unanimous, with the team electing to become the Gamecocks, a change accompanied by the adoption of the school colors of red and white.
