  • Tammy (T): How did the Cake Maiden business begin?
  • Amber (A): Back in college, it was kind of a side business I had back in Florida to earn money on the side. I kind of put it aside when I graduated and my husband and I moved out to Colorado and I had a career out there. Once Covid hit, we had to move back to the South, closer to family and that’s when I started up the cake business again. It’s really been taking off here locally and people seem to really enjoy it. It’s nice to get back into it again.
  • T: What kind of yummy things do you have on your menu?
  • A: I brought some cupcakes today, yellow cake with fresh lemon buttercream icing. It’s very fresh and seasonal. One of my personal favorites is called a pig pickin cake, which is very regional. It’s basically an orange cake with a cool whip frosting that has pineapple and coconut in it. It’s a very fruity, light, and summery option for hot weather.
  • T: What have been some of your most popular items?
  • A: My banana pudding cake, its a yellow base cake with vanilla and in the center is my grandmother’s banana pudding recipe and the outside is a cool whip frosting to keep it nice and light.
  • T: Tell me about some of your custom creations.
  • A: I’m doing my cousin’s wedding cake soon, which is based off a dirt cake. I’m going to take what’s normally a pudding and make it into a cake form. So that’s something I’ve been working on a bit lately and I’m really excited about. The banana pudding cake was something I really created myself.
  • T: What are some of the wildest or most fun projects you’ve worked on?
  • A: Back in the day I did a Spongebob cake that was a lot of fun. There was so much intricate piping and so many different colors and it comes out so cool looking. One of the others was one I made for my husband’s birthday back in the day when we first started hiking. It was a giant cupcake that I made into a mountain and little cupcakes around it that created a hiking trail all the way up to the top.
  • T: So you can do pickups or delivery for customers?
  • A: In Piedmont, I do free delivery for up to 5 miles. Any delivery beyond that, there might be certain fees.
  • T: Where can people go to find out more and place an order with you?
  • A: My Facebook page, The Cake Maiden, is definitely what I use primarily. I have a menu, pictures, reviews, all my local information is there. Any other questions you might need answered, I can get to you really quickly up there.
  • T: Anything else you’d like to share?
  • A: I do have sugar free recipes that I’ve been starting that have been really popular. I have a lot of family that’s diabetic so they’ve been appreciative of those kinds of recipes. So if you’re really interested in trying something sugar free, it’s definitely something I highly recommend. Something a little different and it tastes good too!

I hope you enjoyed this week’s Small Business Spotlight
