These contests were created to encourage all young people to think, debate, and engage on important topics in public policy. Each contest honors a Calhoun County citizen who had a special interest in promoting citizenship and support for their community. The essay contest honors Shirley Justice, who died in 2020. She and her husband Jim wanted to create a legacy that would encourage and develop citizenship, political knowledge, and involvement of all citizens. The essay contest and the Jim & Shirley Justice Center reflect their commitment. The oratorical contest honors the late Dr. George F. McKerley, veterinarian. Dr. McKerley knew the value of a strong education and speaking skills for citizens.
