“The power rests with the people. The people just have to realize it”.- Mayor Ciara Smith
“ At this late stage in the game, we`ve got an election in 4 months , and the new council takes office in a little over 7 months. It just makes sense for us to hire to hire an interim and let the next council ultimately decide this question”- Mayor Jack Draper
Why did I bring these quotes up? Because these are the quotes from our mayor and her predecessor of this city. This council has proven lately these comments are pure hubris and not to be considered.
We have 3 candidates from the city manager interviews. 1 is meeting the standard set by the council. This council did NOT vet them properly or any of the 9 so called “candidates “ who applied.
Of the 3 candidates selected , one is not qualified by the standards set by this council in education.
One is a plaintiff in a lawsuit by a previous city council when as city manager quit his position, then tried to claim FMLA. Unfortunately, he never finished the paperwork and resisted all attempts of communication by that council by email, mail and phone. DO WE REALLY WANT A PERSON WITH A HISTORY OF QUITTING IN HIGH STRESS SITUATIONS FOR CITY MANAGER? DO WE REALLY WANT APERSON WHO WAS THE BOSS OF OUR MAYOR FOR A SHORT TIME COME AND LEAD OUR CITY WHEN HE FAILS HIS JOB DUTIES AND BLAMES EVERYBODY ELSE FOR HIS FAILURES?
The one candidate who has the qualifications for the position has no time in the private sector other than to be a grocery clerk. I applaud him for his service to the state and nation, but Anniston needs an experienced person at the helm of this city that is on the forward move.
I implore this council to wait until November until the new city council is sworn in and ready.
This gives the city time to properly vet candidates as well as look at other qualified candidates.
Let Anniston pick an experienced leader who is more concerned with Anniston than just a spot on a resume.
Anniston needs to decide on a candidate who has character, NOT just qualifications.
If this council decides to overlook these Nathansque words of wisdom, the suffering will not be on you. It will be on the voters of this city whom you swore to be looking out for when you were previously elected.
Do the right and wise action, do not let this present council vote for city manager. Pick an interim for the position like the fore or police chief.
