Thrilling Victories and Stellar Performances: Calhoun County Basketball

Calhoun County, AL – Wheeler’s free throws clinch White Plains’ victory over Anniston’s boys. McDowell, Davis have big performances as Alexandria wins in OT. Smith, Thomas lead Anniston’s undefeated girls to victory.

ANNISTON — Josh Wheeler hit two free throws with 15 seconds left, and White Plains’ boys won 48-46 at Anniston on Monday.

Anniston erased a 13-point White Plains lead in the third quarter and held the Wildcats without a shot for three minutes.

White Plains’ top performers:

—Carter Johnson: 17 points.
—Coleman Ray: 12 points (three 3-pointers).
—Wheeler: nine points (two 3-pointers).

Anniston’s top performers:

—Jacorey Leune: 10 points (two 3-pointers).
—Devin Coleman: nine points (one 3-pointer).
—Delroy Francis: nine points (one 3-pointer).

ALEXANDRIA 92, TALLADEGA 84: Drake Davis hit seven 3-pointers on the way to 28 points, and Alexandria beat Talladega to improve to 6-1. He hit all seven 3-pointers in the first half.

Quendavion McDowell, back from a trip to Texas to attend his brother’s graduation from Air Force basic training, hit 12 of 16 free throws en route to a game-high 34 points.

Alexandria made 26 of 38 free throws overall. The Valley Cubs’ other top performers:

—Cole Wheeler:13 points (two 3-pointers).
—Cleat Forrest: eight points.

Talladega’s top performers:

—R.J. Jones: 34 points (four 3-pointers).
—Jace Roberson: 15 points (two 3-pointers).
—Jayden McCoy: 13 pointers.
—JyKavien Wright: 11 points (one 3-pointer).

Girls

ANNISTON 70, WHITE PLAINS 27: Tykeria Smith and Kiara Thomas scored 18 points apiece to lead Anniston (12-0). Thomas hit three 3-pointers.

White Plains’ top performers:

—Cassidy Arnold: 15 points (two 3-pointers).
—Cooper Martin: eight points.
