It’s almost time for Alexandria volleyball coach Whitney Welch to leave her team to welcome her new baby into the world. The Lady Cubs would like to send her out with a few more victories on the ledger and she has no doubt they’ll play well until she returns. The Lady Cubs picked up two more victories Thursday night, a pair of 2-0 sweeps over White Plains and Spring Garden. They have a date in the Hartselle Tournament Saturday and then doctors will induce labor for the coach’s deliver Monday.

“The kids always play hard no matter what’s going on; they’re resilient,” Welch said. “I feel like they’re playing inconsistently at times and we need to learn how to manage better. But I’m also contributing to some of that as well well as I know I’ve been stressed about having to leave them for a little bit.

“I know they’re going to do great and they are in wonderful hands. At this point, I’m just praying for a healthy baby. I have total faith in this group and know they’ll do great while I’m gone.” Welch said earlier she planned to be beck on the bench with her team in two weeks.

Kailey Dickerson led the Lady Cubs in their win over White Plains with nine kills. Pressley Slaton delivered eight assists and Devan White had nine digs. In the win over Spring Garden, Eryn Spradley had six kills. Christian Hess had 10 assists and Devan White had six digs. For White Plains in its two matches, Bella Higgins had nine kills, Macy Scism had seven kills and eight digs, and Leighton Arnold had eight kills.  [*** read more]
